Elsie was a very good tennis player and a member of the local club. She was also a valued member of the Skipton golf club and played off a handicap of 14.
The following article was in the local newspaper on 10th October 1930.
Skipton Golf Associates bid farewell to their secretary
A most delightful afternoon was spent by the associates of Skipton Golf Club, who met at the kind invitation of Mrs E. W. Austin at her home "Yallambee" Skipton, to bid farewell to one of their number, Mrs Thompson, who has since removed to Ballarat. Mrs Thompson very ably carried out the duties of secretary to the associates club for some time.
After a beautiful afternoon tea, Mrs Borbidge (president) presented to Mrs Thompson a gold wristlet watch, and spoke of her capabilities as secretary and the enthusiasm she displayed throughout her term of office. Mrs Borbidge felt she was expressing the feelings of all members by saying it was with very deep regret they were losing their worthy secretary.
Mrs Notman supplemented the remarks of the president and referred to the sporting spirit shown by Mrs Thompson, which was so much needed in the game of sport and more so in the game of life, and also to her interest in pennant matches. She also wished to thank Mr Thompson for his help.
Miss E Elder endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers and also regretted losing Miss Phyllis Thompson who was a promising girl guide.
Mrs Thompson, in responding, thanked the ladies for their kind words and valuable gift.
Before the party dispersed, Mrs Borbidge moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Austin for her kind thought and hospitality.
Employment - Prior to her marriage, Elsie worked in a bank. She was a good dressmaker and had a particular interest in Millinery. Phyllis remembers her as being very talented and painted pictures on cushions.

Event Note
Elsie discovered she had breast cancer. The lump was about the size of an egg before it was discovered. The breast and lymphnodes were removed in a radical mastectomy at Melbourne Prince Henry Hospital by a cancer specialist, Dr Kaye Scott. A contributing factor may have been an accidental hit in that breast with a golf ball when she was about 5 months pregnant with Glenda. Her condition deteriorated despite the removal of the breast. At the time of one of her visits to Melbourne for a checkup, she met Diana Dimell, an American nutritionist. She returned home with many herbal remedies and ideas for a better diet. |
