Narrative

Ruby (known to me all my life as Nana) was a very loving grandmother and couldn't do enough for any of the grandchildren so long as what was done was acknowledged and never forgotten.

Nana taught me how to play cards, any card game from poker (all varieties), euka, 500, switch, patience, blackjack, sevens, and cannaster (although I learned the finer details of cannaster from Jennie Vajtauer and her father Mr Leveck?). We would play poker with matches as our betting implements although I had no missunderstandings about them representing money even though money didn't mean much to a seven-eight year old in those days.

Regularly on a Saturday morning, Shane and I would stay with Nana (118 Church St, Geelong) while mum worked at the TAB and dad was always working an extra shift at the Railways or so it seemed. Shane and I would play in the front lounge room building a cubby using the cushions from the lounge suite.
