Mills, Herbert Russell

Birth Name Mills, Herbert Russell
Gender male
Age at Death 86 years, 8 months, 23 days

Narrative

Herb was like a second father to both Shane and I. He was always there when dad wasn't. He taught us how to fish and regularly took us fishing on the rivers around the Geelong region.

Herb always joked with us and one of his favourite jokes was "Why did Mrs Tomatoe blush, because she saw Mr Green pee over the fence." and a familliar saying when there was a gathering of people at his house was "Well I'm home and I wish every other bugger was".

Herb was a brilliant card player. When playing Cribbage, he was able to tell you the score of your hand at a glance. Playing euka was a pleasurable past time event specially after Christmas lunch in the early days. Herb would team up with Shane and John and I would try to beat them, generally without success.

Event Note

Herb passed away at 4.05pm ESDT in the Birdsey Wing at the Geelong Hospital.

He had been in hospital for the previous 6-7 weeks and Phyllis visited him daily. On occasion Herb would be very lucid and aware of what was happening, but mostly very down and uncaring of what was going on around him. He was released to come home shortly after Christmas but was unmanageable by Phyllis at home. He was re-admitted some 4 days later.

Burial - Herb's funeral service was held at 3.00pm at Tuckers Funeral service Chapel in Grovedale, Geelong.
